How to proceed with the marketing of bicycles?

In the following article, you can read about the requirements for putting electric bicycles and children's bicycles on the market.

Bicycles are a so-called non-prescribed product, i.e. a product that is not "prescribed" by any of the government regulations that were issued to implement the law and that set technical requirements for it. However, there are specific cases where in the case of bicycles it is possible to talk about a specified product, namely:

• children's bicycles - bicycles with a maximum saddle height of up to 435 mm, measured as the vertical distance of the top of the saddle from the ground, with the saddle in a horizontal position and the seatpost set to the lowest level - are considered a toy intended for play. In this case, Government Regulation No. 86/2011 Coll. applies to such a bike. on the technical requirements for toys, by which the European Directive 2009/48/EC on toy safety is implemented in the Czech Republic,
• bicycles with pedals that are equipped with an electric motor and that do not fall within the scope of the European Directive 2002/24/EC on type approval of two-wheeled and three-wheeled motorized vehicles (implemented in the Czech Republic in Act No. 56/2001 Coll., on the conditions for the operation of vehicles on land communications) is covered by the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC (implemented in the Czech Republic in Government Regulation No. 176/2008 Coll.). Furthermore, depending on the equipment with electrical elements, the directive 2014/30/EU regarding electromagnetic compatibility (implemented in the Czech Republic in Government Regulation No. 117/2016 Coll. on technical requirements for products from the point of view of their electromagnetic compatibility) must also be considered.

In the case of children's bicycles and bicycles with pedals that are equipped with an electric motor, the products must be subjected to the test procedures described in the mentioned regulations and marked with the CE mark.

We therefore recommend and at the same time offer a certification service where, at the request of a manufacturer, importer or other person, we as an accredited certification body can certify by issuing a certificate that the product complies with the technical requirements stated in the certificate.
